His Story

Bert’s life took a dramatic turn 42 years ago when he was in college. After a late-night shift at a restaurant, he was driving home and was hit by a drunk driver, resulting in a severe spinal cord injury at the C 6-7 level. Despite dying twice during the following weeks, he was brought back to life with the help of incredible doctors and underwent extensive rehabilitation at the Lucerne Spinal Center in Orlando, Florida.

During his rehabilitation, Bert’s Recreation Therapist played a crucial role in his recovery. She encouraged him to get involved in wheelchair sports, which reignited his passion for life and competition. This support system, combined with the love and encouragement from friends and family, helped Bert navigate the challenging transition back home.

Achievements in Wheelchair Racing

Bert’s introduction to wheelchair racing began during his rehabilitation. His therapist introduced him to Randy Null, a wheelchair racer who inspired Bert to pursue the sport. Bert’s determination saw him push through initial challenges, eventually competing in his first 5K road race just four months after his return home.

Paralympic Success

Bert’s hard work and perseverance paid off as he went on to compete in three Paralympic Games:

  • 1992 Barcelona: Won a gold medal and set a world record in the 400-meter relay.
  • 2000 Sydney: Competed and continued to make his mark on the international stage.
  • 2004 Athens: Participated in his last Paralympic Games, concluding an illustrious racing career.
  • His racing career included 3 Paralympics, 87 marathons and 2 ultra marathons.

Traveling for Independence

Traveling for competitions helped Bert regain his independence. His experiences at various events, such as the Wheelchair Nationals in 1985, where he learned valuable life skills from peers, were instrumental in his personal growth and self-sufficiency. Bert emphasizes the importance of peer support in navigating life with a disability.

As a family-man with a love for travel, he and his wife, Joy travel extensively despite the challenges associated with wheelchair travel.

Love and Life

Bert’s journey is also marked by his love story with Joy, a recreation therapist. Working in the medical supply business, he met her on a sales call. Their meeting was serendipitous, leading to a quick engagement and a beautiful wedding. Together, they have traveled extensively, raising twins and embracing life’s adventures.
