New Orleans Rough On Scooters and Chairs But It Can Be Done

On my recent cruise from New Orleans, I was fortunate to spend three days before the cruise and one day after to explore New Orleans and the French Quarter. My pre-cruise stay was in the Holiday Inn Club Vacations New Orleans Resort on Carondelet St, which is Bourbon Street extended. The restaurant and bar were not opened yet, so my meals and adult beverages had to be elsewhere in NOLA, certainly not a difficult problem especially since Scootaround had provided me with a scooter while there.

After and long day flying from Richmond, Virginia and Ubering to the Hotel, I opted for Daisy Dukes for dinner, only 1/2 block toward Canal and Bourbon Streets.

While the atmosphere, drinks and dinner were fabulous, I got my first taste of rolling on New Orleans sidewalks.

As a general rule, they are very uneven, bumpy and broken even to complete sections missing. This required me to turn around, go back to the corner, cross over to the otherside and hope there were no breaks over there.

This theme was repeated numerous times while exploring New Orleans including a trip down Canal Street to Harrah’s Casino and the Riverwalk, which I could not get to; a Saturday morning trip to the iconic Cafe du Monde on Decatur St for Beignets,

and a long afternoon and evening on Bourbon Street.

Don’t get me wrong. I loved my time in New Orleans. And it can be done on a scooter, manual chair or power chair.

Just be careful. Watch what you are doing. And be patient because you might have to double back, or even go around a block to avoid a mishap. At least all of the corner curbs have ramps so you can cross any street.

Take your time and also take extra care when crossing street car tracks. They are worse than the sidewalks.

Enjoy New Orleans despite the challenges. I did.
