Jamala Wildlife Lodge offers you the opportunity of experiencing the thrill of close encounters with some of the world’s most dangerous and endangered animals, as well as relaxing in the unique atmosphere of its three individually designed five star Accommodation. The African inspired luxury suites lie in the heart of the National Zoo & Aquarium in Canberra and epitomize style and comfort. The combination of opulent surroundings, incredible animal encounters and gourmet cuisine alongside Jamala’s five star hospitality ensures that all guests share in a once in a lifetime experience during their stay.

ACCESSIBLE ACCOMODATION

Location : Jamala Wildlife Lodge, Lady Denman Drive, Canberra ACT, Australia

Accessible rooms:

  • 2 x Capuchin rooms (uShaka Lodge) – these are the most accessible of the hotel rooms, with roll in shower, handrails around toilet, and are closest to reception in case assistance is required.
  • Two other uShaka Lodge rooms (the Reef Room and Wild Encounter Room 1) and one Jungle Bungalow (Lion room) – these rooms are suitable for people with limited mobility (no stairs) but wheelchair users would struggle in bathroom without assistance. (Shower screen has small lip, no handrails around toilet)

  • Mobility scooters available on request
  • Additional equipment available: Jamala staff can arrange equipment rentals at the cost of the guest.

Hotel public area:

  • Level/ramp access to public areas
  • Assistance animals: not allowed as the area is quarantined due to the room being in a working zoo.
  • Parking spaces: 1 accessible parking permit space located near Jamala entrance, others available at the Zoo entrance.

DAY 1

Location :National Zoo & Aquarium, 999 Lady Denman Dr, Canberra ACT 2611, Australia

1.30pm to 3.00pm     Arrivals     Meet in uShaka Lodge, and enjoy some Afternoon Tea, become acquainted with Colin, & Colby (our Black & White Colobus Monkeys) and enjoying the beautiful shark tank. Staff will get you to complete your dinner menu selections before heading out into the zoo.

1:00pm to 3:00pm     Self-guided afternoon Safari     A self-guided tour booklet will be available at check-in that will allow you to do your own tour of a section of the zoo. This features the recommended trail highlighted for you and interesting facts about our animals that you will see on this route. You will be taken on a guided tour the next morning to see the other areas of the zoo and its beautiful animals.

3:00pm     Room access     Meet at the marked meeting point in your booklet that was handed to you at check-in, to be given the keys to your room. A guide will deliver you to your luxurious home-away-from-home to relax, or alternatively you may wish to further explore the zoo. Guests staying in a Giraffe Treehouse will be introduced to Hummer at their room at around 4pm.

from 6:30pm     Getting to dinner and drinks     For guests staying in our Jungle Bungalows and Giraffe Treehouses, please meet at the bus stop where there will be a bus pick-up (the first at 6:30pm and the second at 6.40pm) to bring you to the Rainforest Cave for dinner. During daylight saving time, guests may wander through the zoo to dinner. uShaka guests please make your way to the cave for 6:30pm pre-dinner drinks.

7:15pm     Dinner     Indulge in our Chefs’ African-influenced dinner party menu, featuring some beautiful wines and Moet champagne. When the Rainforest Cave is at maximum occupancy, guests staying in uShaka Lodge (and occasionally other guests) will dine upstairs alongside the sharks after meeting the animals during drinks on the terrace. When Jamala is at peak occupancy, several guests may dine on the heated and enclosed terrace adjoining the Cave.

9:00pm to 10:00pm     Transfer back to room     As the evening draws to a close, we will have a bus service to deliver Giraffe Treehouse and Jungle Bungalow guests back to their suite to enjoy the sounds of the zoo at night.

DAY 2

Location :Jamala Wildlife Lodge, Lady Denman Drive, Canberra ACT, Australia

DEPARTURE DAY – Guests staying in Giraffe Treehouses or a Jungle Bungalow (includes Lion room)

6:45am to 7:00am     Rise and shine     You can utilise your tea and coffee making facilities and have a pastry prior to your morning safari and then enjoy a full a la carte breakfast afterwards.

7:00am to 8:30am     Morning Safari     Make your way to the African Plains gazebo (number 16 on the map) to commence your guided morning tour of the zoo. You will be visiting the open range section to experience the sights and sounds as our residents awaken and prepare for the day.

9:00am to 10:00am     Breakfast     After your morning safari you have an opportunity to freshen up before you make your way to the Rainforest Cave for your a la carte breakfast.

10:30am to 11:00am     Luggage collection

Please ensure all luggage is packed and placed inside your room by the door for collection prior to 10.30am. If you don’t require baggage collection, please advise reception.

If you are not in a hurry to reach your next destination, feel free to check-out at Jamala Reception and enjoy the zoo for the remainder of the day. Remember to check if any spots are available for further animal encounters before you leave

11:00am     Farewell for all guests     If you are not in a hurry to reach your next destination, feel free to check out and enjoy the zoo for the remainder of the day. Remember to check if any spots are available for further animal encounters before you leave.

DEPARTURE DAY – Guests staying in uShaka Lodge (includes Capuchin rooms)

7:30am to 8.30am     Breakfast     Start your day with an a la carte breakfast in the Rainforest Cave. Those guests happy with a continental breakfast along with a sleep-in can come down a little later.

9.00am to 10.30am     Morning Safari     Make your way to the African plains gazebo (number 16 on the map) to commence your guided morning tour in the zoo. You will be visiting the open range section of the zoo to experience the sights and sounds as our residents awaken and prepare for the day.

10.30am to 11.00am     At your leisure     Relax back in your room and freshen up after your morning tour. When you are ready to depart please bring your luggage to reception with your room key for check out. Should you require assistance with luggage, please contact our reception team and they will be able to assist you.

11:00am     Farewell for all guests     If you are not in a hurry to reach your next destination, feel free to check out at Jamala Reception and enjoy the zoo for the remainder of the day. Remember to check if any spots are available for further animal encounters before you leave.
