In a move setting a global standard for accessible tourism, many of Spain’s beaches are now offering free amphibious wheelchairs, allowing people with disabilities to enjoy the sea alongside everyone else.
These specially designed chairs feature large, buoyant wheels and waterproof materials, enabling users to navigate sand with ease and even float safely in shallow waters. Trained beach staff and volunteers are often on hand to provide assistance, ensuring both comfort and safety for visitors.
The program goes beyond accessibility — it’s about dignity, equality, and joy. For many, feeling the sea breeze and waves was once out of reach; today, it’s an everyday reality in coastal cities including Barcelona, Valencia, and Málaga.
Many of these beaches also boast accessible pathways, adapted changing rooms, and shaded areas, creating model destinations for inclusive travel.
