Nestled in the northeast of Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia has spent years creating an inclusive, accessible destination for travelers from around the world, addressing a wide range of needs and interests. This is a region that offers everything, from the mountains to the sea, to an excellent wine region, ancient architecture and archeological gems. Recently, its coastal area has been at the heart of extensive efforts to enhance accessibility for visitors with disabilities, making it an ideal spot for relaxation, culture, great food and wine—and more adventurous activities.

From sun-kissed beaches in Lignano Sabbiadoro and Grado, to the peaceful lagoon areas of Marano Lagunare and the Isonzo river’s mouth, anyone can savor the sea’s many facets. Two local organizations also offer sailing experiences for all, complete with English-speaking instructors, wheelchair accessible sailing boats and hoists for boarding, letting you take the helm along this scenic coast. Adventurous guests can even join the famous Barcolana Regatta every October in Trieste’s Gulf, aboard the adaptive boats from “Sea4All” and “Duino 45° Nord.”

Many beaches in the region provide raised sun loungers, wide walkways, accessible restrooms, and trained staff to assist guests with mobility needs, ensuring a perfect beach day. For those looking for culture and architecture, Friuli Venezia Giulia’s coast brims with historic charms: Grado—known as the “Island of the Sun”—has a beautiful walkable old center, complete with accessible thermal baths.

Trieste, the region’s capital, further showcases Friuli Venezia Giulia’s majestic beauty and inclusive vibe – all with the predominant presence of the sea. Visitors can explore Piazza Unità, one of Europe’s most beautiful squares on the sea front, and immerse themselves in the city’s deep-rooted coffee culture—where literary greats like James Joyce, once gathered to sip and debate. At Miramare Castle, former residence of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, you can enjoy an accessible museum and a beautiful garden perched above the Adriatic Sea. The castle’s ramped pathways and well-kept grounds ensure a comfortable experience for travellers using mobility aids, and the Braille signage gives plenty of information to those with visual disabilities.

Nature lovers will also find accessible routes to explore. Trails at the Isonzo’s river mouth or in Marano’s lagoon are ideal for birdwatching and gentle exploration of unspoiled landscapes, featuring rest areas and sweeping panoramas – wild horses included! Beyond beaches and nature reserves, museums and cultural sites throughout the region incorporate ramps, elevators, and guided tours for visitors with mobility, sensory, or intellectual disabilities. In Aquileia, once a major Roman hub, travelers can visit an ancient basilica and archaeological museum that are fully wheelchair-accessible, and experience tactile explorations of mosaics and archeological artifacts.

Combined with a culinary scene renowned for fresh seafood, local wines and friendly hospitality, Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region that warmly embraces all visitors, ensuring that each day—from sunrise to sunset—feels like a personal invitation to relax and explore.
