As a wheelchair user and mother, I had always looked for an accessible vacation rental that I could enjoy with my family in the Poconos. Unfortunately, I could never find a rental property that was truly accessible. I was disappointed time and time again after going to a rental which I was assured was accessible only to find that I could not take part in many of the areas of the house or activities with my family. I decided that I would make such a vacation home myself.

The homes in the Poconos are beautifully situated in nature but because of the high levels of snow in the winter, they are usually elevated. After scouring many sites, I found my dream vacation home right on a lake. Once we purchased the home, I spent six months renovating it to be truly accessible for wheelchair users — and myself! We wheelchair users often have to settle on accommodations that are either not truly accessible or accessible but not beautiful. With our vacation home, I was able to create both. After our first family vacation at the home, I realized that I wanted to share it with others.

Our home was one of the first to be chosen by Airbnb to be featured in its Adaptable category. As a result, the company sent a crew to photograph and verify its accessible features, which you can learn about below.

Inside our wheelchair accessible vacation rental

Our beautifully furnished four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is a haven for guests seeking both adventure and tranquility. With barrier-free entry, an elevator providing access between floors, and two ADA accessible bathrooms, everyone can enjoy their stay with ease. Wide, 32-inch stepless doorways to key areas of the home ensure ease of navigation and mobility throughout.

The home has a long list of wheelchair accessible features:

  • Step free access into the home
  • Stiltz Elevator from ground floor to main floor, 500 lb weight limit
  • Step free shower with handrails, shower chair
  • 2 bathrooms with doors wider than 34 inches, toilet grab bars and custom sink vanities to roll under
  • 2 bedrooms with doors wider than 34 inches
  • Step free ramp to outdoor fire pit
  • Ramp to the top floor patio
  • Custom elevated 12-person dining room table, making it easy to sit at with a wheelchair
  • Hippocampe Beach & All-terrain Wheelchair at the home to use at the lake’s beachfront (10 minute roll from house), or the many hiking trails in the Poconos area

A truly comfortable home away from home

The open floor plan is designed to maximize the breathtaking lake views, with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the home with natural light. A spacious living room featuring a cozy sectional leather sofa, gas fireplace, and Smart TV is the perfect place to unwind. The adjoining dining area boasts a custom-made farmhouse table that seats 12, making family meals or group gatherings effortless and enjoyable.

For those who love to cook, the gourmet kitchen is fully equipped with high-end appliances, including a Vitamix blender, Cuisinart stand mixer, Ninja air fryer, waffle maker, and even a pizza stone. A fully stocked coffee bar with a Breville espresso machine, Keurig, and French press ensures you’ll start every morning right.

Entertainment options and wheelchair accessible amenities

Rain or shine, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy. The game room on the ground floor features a billiards table, foosball, arcade games, a Star Wars digital pinball machine, and more. If you prefer the outdoors, the property includes a variety of recreational options, such as a basketball hoop, outdoor ping pong table, cornhole, bocce ball, and even laser tag.

Step outside to one of three large decks, each offering a unique way to soak in the serene surroundings. The main deck includes a propane fire table, sectional seating, and a Big Green Egg BBQ smoker. The ground-level deck boasts a seven-person hot tub and Adirondack rocking chairs, while a third deck features hammock swings and an outdoor sauna—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

The home’s prime location provides direct access to the lake, where guests can enjoy complimentary use of canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and a rowboat. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the provided fishing poles and gear, while those who prefer swimming can take a short 10-minute walk to the community lake beach.

With high-speed WiFi, five Smart TVs, a dedicated work desk, and an EV charger, this home offers modern conveniences alongside rustic charm. A driveway accommodating up to seven vehicles ensures plenty of space for guests.

Situated just 15 minutes from Camelback and Shawnee Mountain ski resorts and within 30 minutes of local water parks, Mount Airy Casino, hiking trails, and Bushkill Falls, this home is the ideal getaway in every season.
