A Legacy of Inclusion

Since opening in 2005, Georgia Aquarium has steadily added features and programs to welcome visitors of all abilities. Georgia Aquarium+2Georgia Aquarium+2 In recent years, it became the first aquarium to receive Gold Certification from WheelChariot for outstanding accessibility efforts. Georgia Aquarium+2Georgia Aquarium+2 The aquarium also works closely with KultureCity to enhance sensitivity toward visitors with sensory needs, offering low-sensory hours, quiet zones, and sensory tools. Mobility & Wheelchair Access

One of the cornerstones of inclusivity here is mobility access. Here’s what you should know:

  • Wheelchairs on site: The aquarium offers manual wheelchairs free of charge, available on a first-come, first-served basis with a picture ID deposit. Georgia Aquarium+3Georgia Aquarium+3Georgia Aquarium+3 They must be returned to Guest Relations at the end of your visit to claim your ID back. Georgia Aquarium+1
  • No advance reservations: You cannot reserve the aquarium’s wheelchairs ahead of time. Georgia Aquarium+1
  • Pushing only: These wheelchairs require a second person to push. They are not self-propelled. Georgia Aquarium
  • Golf cart shuttles: From the Aquarium’s parking deck to the building, golf cart shuttles are available (also on a first-come basis) to transport guests. Georgia Aquarium+3Georgia Aquarium+3Georgia Aquarium+3
  • Accessible parking: The parking deck includes designated accessible spots (Level 3), with some capacity for larger vehicles. Georgia Aquarium+1
  • Unblocked views & floor icons: Look for wheelchair emblems on the floor near exhibits to guide accessible viewing. Georgia Aquarium+2Georgia Aquarium+2
  • Encounter programs: If you’re interested in snorkeling or diving programs, the Dive Immersion Team is certified through the Handicapped Scuba Association to assist guests of all abilities. Georgia Aquarium+2Georgia Aquarium+2

That said, anecdotal reports from visitors mention challenges such as long uphill walks to drop-off areas and limited places to rest, which suggest that planning extra time and support may be wise. Tripadvisor

If the aquarium’s available wheelchairs are exhausted, external rental services like Scootaround can deliver mobility scooters or chairs to your hotel or the aquarium ahead of time. Scootaround

Sensory, Visual & Hearing Supports

Georgia Aquarium recognizes that accessibility is more than ramps and wheelchairs. Here’s how it works to be inclusive across the senses:

  • Low-sensory hours: Early each day (until 10 a.m.), lighting is reduced, microphones are silenced, and ambient sound is kept to a minimum. Georgia Aquarium+1
  • Sensory room & bags: The Wilkins Rhodes Sensory Room (level 2) lets visitors decompress from overstimulation. Sensory bags—with items like fidget toys and headphones—are free to check out (ID required). Georgia Aquarium+2Georgia Aquarium+2
  • Audio & tactile enhancements: Audio tours for visually impaired guests are available via the aquarium’s app or website. Select exhibits include tactile features, and staff can provide descriptive narration. Georgia Aquarium+2Georgia Aquarium+2
  • Captioning & ASL: Animal presentation theaters offer closed captioning devices. With advance notice, ASL interpretation may be provided for certain events. Georgia Aquarium+3Georgia Aquarium+3Georgia Aquarium+3
  • Assistive tech: Thanks to a partnership with ReBokeh Vision Technologies, the aquarium offers free assistive software for visitors with low vision. Georgia Aquarium+1

Best Practices for an Accessible Visit

To make the most of your trip with comfort and confidence:

  1. Arrive early — Especially for wheelchair availability and quieter crowds.
  2. Plan ahead & request accommodations — Use their accessibility request form to let them know your needs in advance. Georgia Aquarium
  3. Use the app & map — Digital maps and schedules help you plan routes and showtimes around mobility needs. Georgia Aquarium+1
  4. Allow extra time between exhibits — Some paths may be longer or require assistance.
  5. Reserve show spots early — The dolphin and sea lion shows require day-of reservations and fill fast. Georgia Aquarium+1
  6. Keep phone numbers handy — For special encounters, you may need to email dive@georgiaaquarium.org or contact hospitality@georgiaaquarium.org in advance. Georgia Aquarium+1

Why It Matters

By weaving accessibility into its design and operations, Georgia Aquarium ensures that the spectacle of marine life is not just a visual experience but a truly shared one. Its infrastructure, staff training, and thoughtful services signify a commitment to inclusion — an invitation that all visitors, no matter their needs, deserve to receive.
